On February 26, 2012, an unarmed Black teenager was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer in central Florida. Over the following year, the nation was transfixed by the details and by standoffs between those who argued that George Zimmerman was within his rights to kill Trayvon Martin, and those who said Trayvon was the victim of an overzealous racist vigilante.
