Our program opens with a pair of conversations about Cuba as the U.S. moves to normalize relations with the island nation. First, journalist Ann Louise Bardach describes why a new U.S.-Cuba relationship is unlikely to benefit Afro-Cubans. Then filmmaker Catherine Murphy, an adjunct professor at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs, joins us to talk about the history of cultural overlap between the U.S. and Cuba.

Hydrologist Jay Famiglietti, senior water scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a professor at the University of California at Irvine, joins us to discuss the severity of California’s drought and its potential effects on the rest of the nation.

Actor Isaiah Washington, best known for his award-winning work on the ABC drama “Grey’s Anatomy” and the CW hit series “The 100,” is the producer and star of a new film, “Blackbird,” in which he portrays the father of a devout Christian teenager struggling with his true identity. Washington joins us to discuss how his performance was informed by his views on parenthood and Black identity.
